I do not usually lead programs. My role as the Volunteer Coordinator and Assistant Educator at the Museum tends to be more behind-the-scenes; I schedule, prep, and make sure things run smoothly. I was surprised, then, when I found out that I would be in charge of running two separate programs this past Friday. Luckily, the programs went off without a hitch, and I managed to gain some important insights from both.
First on the docket was Creative Explorers; the Museum’s art education program for children aged 2 to 4. Toddlers and their adults get to experience various art supplies, methods, and projects, all while learning more about the world around them. For Friday’s Creative Explorers program, we decided to try out paper-making while featuring the mischievous creatures found in the permanent collection exhibition Myth and Folly.

Typically I’m a little nervous about messy projects with toddlers, but these kids not only kept the paper pulp off the floor but also made some incredibly cool paper shapes. I learned that not only should I trust myself to lead a group of three-year-olds, but that messy projects can be pretty fun. Even our docents got in on the action!

The second program of the day was Novel Notions. Each month, readers meet on a Friday evening from 5 to 6 to discuss a different book and experience the artwork in galleries in a different way. February’s book was Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt.

February’s Novel Notions book.
I will admit that I went into Novel Notions a little nervous, as I did not enjoy reading February’s book. However, not only was the discussion fascinating, but it led me to think about the novel differently. We got so wrapped up in our discussion that I even forgot to take any photos! Ultimately, I left book club with a newfound respect for the effort that it takes to lead a discussion and the determination to fully finish the upcoming books!
Even though I was apprehensive about leading Friday’s programs, I am pleased that they went so well. If either Creative Explorers or Novel Notions interest you, I encourage you to check them out on March 28th. Creative Explorers will meet at 10:30 for World Travelers, and readers will be enjoying the book The Forest of Wool and Steel written by Natsu Miyashita. I might not be leading both that day, but it’s a good bet I will be there.
