The Freedoms We Enjoy

Posted on May 25, 2016
When people find out I work in a museum, they often ask what the neatest thing I saw or handled was. The artifact I always mention first is the dress uniform of Army Ranger Patrick Tillman.

Postcard from Maine

After months of planning — double- and triple-checking every detail — the Woodson Art Museum's Maine Art Adventure is underway. Eager to sample the sights, art and history, and tastes of Maine, we dove right in.

Living for the Minute

During nightly evening walks, I can’t help but get caught up in my surroundings and the desire to preserve the sensations. I can relate to an artist’s need to sketch and work en plein air. Capturing the moments when light, landscape, and fauna come together is priceless. Making Marks includes eighty-nine works featuring captured moments.

Share Your Stories on April 4

Posted on March 30, 2016
We hope many Woodson Art Museum members and enthusiasts will share favorite memories and photographs with a broader, national audience via Facebook on Monday, April 4, in celebration of the Woodson's recognition as a 2016 National Medal finalist. The Woodson Art Museum is being recognized as one of only seven art museums in the country that are among the 30 finalists for the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. On April 4, the Woodson will be highlighted on the Institute of Museum and Library Services Facebook page.

Got to Love Tourism . . .

I was impressed and happy to hear the news last week that the Woodson Art Museum was the recipient of the Wisconsin Governor’s Tourism Award for Arts, Culture & Heritage. Not only is it a major feather in our cap to be honored as a premier tourist destination in the state, but it’s also a testament to the hard work and dedication by every member of the staff to make the Museum a destination for visitors from throughout the region and beyond.

On The Road Again!

For more than three decades, the Woodson Art Museum has provided exhibitions to other museums. In the early 1980s, a local moving company built crates to be used for shipping the artwork. While our crate design has changed little over the years, we now build our crates in house.

Recipe for Success

Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos, and Toys in the Attic opened this past weekend to record crowds and wide smiles. The exhibition and Walter Wick’s presence – a main ingredient! – at the Woodson Art Museum throughout the weekend were a winning combination.

Whirlwind Week

What a whirlwind week. After several days of keeping barely contained excitement corked behind a Cheshire cat grin, it’s a relief and pure joy to herald the good news. The Woodson Art Museum is a finalist for the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. Yesterday, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency supporting the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums, announced the thirty finalists – fifteen of which are museums and only seven of which are art museums – from throughout the United States.

Share Art

When asked what I do or what my role is at the Woodson Art Museum, my brief distilled answer is, “I share art.” Sharing art is elegant in its simplicity. There isn’t a right or wrong answer. No correct spelling, proper grammar, or formula required. No prior experience needed. Read a book with a toddler and you’ll soon discover that even the youngest has an opinion about art, as a favorite illustration brings delight.
