Habitats That Feed in More Ways Than Just One

When you work at a museum that’s collection specializes in avian art, you grow a fondness for and knowledge of birds. Though I’ve always had a love for plants, before working at the Woodson Art Museum, I didn’t think that I would have such fun creating a diverse habitat for birds through landscaping in my yard.

Jurying nearly 1,200 artworks is not an easy task; it is even harder choosing the 89 artworks that will be exhibited this September, but the jurors lent their expertise in selecting wonderful contemporary artworks displaying the best of avian art.

With this recent late winter thaw, soon to be covered again by this week’s snowstorm, the exposed grass outside my window offered many snacks to flocking birds. Live on the Woodson Art Museum’s website is an opportunity to pluck a tasty treat out of the springtime earth: submitting an artwork for consideration in the 2023 Birds in Art exhibition by the April 17 deadline.

I’m recently back from an extraordinary experience . . . seven days aboard the Lindblad/National Geographic Venture, traveling from Juneau to Sitka, exploring small harbors and open straits, stunning mammoth glaciers, uninhabited islands, rocky shorelines, lush rain forests and muskegs, and streams filled with spawning salmon.

With an annually organized exhibition, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that in one way or another, someone at the Woodson Art Museum is always working on an aspect of Birds in Art. Distribution of the 2022 exhibition prospectus is a priority now, as Elaina’s recent blog and “how-to-submit” video emphasized. It’s a source of pride that the Woodson Art Museum remains committed to Birds in Art; the show will go on.
