WAUSAU, WISCONSIN: Central Wisconsin teens, ages 13-18, are invited to create artwork for SPACE: A Teen Art Exhibition to be held at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in spring 2012. Another spring exhibition at the Museum, NASA| ART: 50 Years of Exploration, inspired the theme for this first exhibition organized by the Museum’s Teen Art Council.
Students are invited to consider the following questions as they create up to three artworks each in any medium, reflecting their own interpretations of SPACE: What does SPACE mean to you? How would you express the concept of SPACE in artwork?
Throughout February and March, a completed entry form and digital images of the artworks may be submitted in jpeg or tiff format – 72 dpi (pixels/inch); CYMK or RGB; largest dimension must be five inches (pixel dimension 1500) – online via a link on the Museum’s website at www.lywam.org, via email to museum@lywam.org, or by burning images onto a CD and mailing or hand delivering it to: Woodson Art Museum, SPACE Exhibition, 700 North Twelfth Street, Wausau, WI, 54403.
About two dozen artworks will be selected by an online public vote, April 10 through April 20, on a specially designed SPACE exhibition page on the Woodson Art Museum’s website. All entries will be posted online anonymously. Individuals may vote online once, for up to five artworks.
Artists will be notified April 23, and the selected artwork must be matted, ready to hang/install, and delivered to the Museum no later than April 29. All teen artists selected for the SPACE exhibition receive an art supply gift package compliments of Jack Richeson & Co. Fine Art Materials.
SPACE: A Teen Art Exhibition will be displayed at the Woodson Art Museum, May 1 through June 3. A reception for SPACE artists, friends, and family will be held on Friday, May 11, 6-8 p.m., to celebrate the creative efforts of the artists as well as the organizational efforts of the Teen Art Council.
The Teen Art Council, known as TAC, for short, was formed by the Woodson Art Museum in the fall of 2010 to involve teens in planning fun events for teens at the Museum, to encourage a lifelong interest in art, and to focus attention on museum-related careers.
The next TAC teen event, Beyond the Box, on Friday, December 9, 6-8:30 p.m., features food and music, a scavenger hunt, a turn at the lathe, and an opportunity to win Noodles & Company certificates. Teens see inventive boxes in two exhibitions,Boxes and Their Makers: Contemporary Woodworkers and Think Inside the Box, and then learn to use a lathe to create a wood-turned piece with guidance from Wisconsin Valley Woodturners.
The Teen Art Council meets on the second Monday of each month, 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the Museum to plan events and enjoys dinner compliments of Noodles & Company. TAC seeks representation for all area high schools. To learn more about TAC, call education curator Jayna Hintz at 715-845-7010.
