Who doesn’t like cake?! A rhetorical question.
Everyone likes cake, and cake with ice cream is even better.
Layer on to that an oh-so-clever Woodson Art Museum staff member – Shari Schroeder – who suggested that we add an anniversary cake to this past weekend’s 40th anniversary Birds in Art festivities.
What better way, Shari speculated, to cap off the Saturday barbecue supper than with cake and ice cream.
With seventy-four – yes! – artists here to celebrate the opening of the 2015 Birds in Art exhibition, it was clear that our challenge would be to elevate the art and artistry of cake decorating.
Not a team to wimp out in the face of a challenge, we enlisted the talents of not only a superb baker – Wausau’s Loving Traditions Cakery – but also the Museum’s longtime, trusted and talented graphic designer, Rick Wunsch.
Voila! A cake decorated with edible paper on which was printed four collages featuring details from the artworks of all seventy-four artists in attendance. Our very own cake masterpiece.
There were oohs and aahs of delight as artists and guests caught their first glimpse of this creative confection. Identifying “their piece of the cake” proved more difficult for some. It was fun to watch as cameras and smartphones clicked away, recording yet another Birds in Art surprise.
At the end of a glorious and exhilarating weekend, leave it to artist Sherrie York to sum it up: “The icing on the cake WAS the icing on the cake!”
I wholeheartedly agree.
