Digging a Little Deeper

Each Birds in Art exhibition brings new works of diverse size, subject matter, mediums, and techniques to the Museum’s galleries. While it’s easy to see the artistry and craftsmanship implemented by the artists while strolling through the exhibition, sometimes a closer look helps the viewer understand what an artist or artwork is all about. The Museum’s YouTube series “Artist Voices” is a great way to dig a little deeper into the world of Birds in Art.

This year, artist residency and adult program manager Rachel Hausmann-Schall and I have had the pleasure of continuing the “Artist Voices” series, working with seven artists utilizing a variety of mediums and perspectives. These short, but revealing, videos will continue to roll out through the 2024 Birds in Art exhibition period. From Darrell Warner’s bold watercolor The Brook Runner to Jennifer Felton’s delicate sculpture Balancing Act, this year’s selections are sure to appeal to every art lover. Much like the exhibition in the galleries, there’s truly something for everyone.

Editing each of these videos deepened my understanding of what it takes for each artist to bring their scenes to life. I think every patron of Birds in Art tends to gravitate towards their favorite bird, medium, or color palette when deciding which works to observe more closely, and I’m no different. However, the video-editing process has expanded my interests in artworks that I may have overlooked before. Whether because of a unique perspective or interesting technique, every artwork in the exhibition has something to teach us. Having the chance to dive into these artists’ processes headfirst has been an entertaining learning experience, and I’m sure the viewers of these videos will fell the same way.

Check out this year’s “Artist Voices” videos on the Museum’s YouTube channel as they continue to be released this fall.
