In the staff offices upstairs at the Woodson Art Museum, there has been a major undertaking to implement a new software solution.

Art Park, the Museum's lower level interactive gallery is newly re-landscaped with hand-painted images of botanicals on the walls in blue and white paint and an oversized still life sculpture featuring an all white tomato, pear, pepper, and grapes surrounded by tables and chairs with drawing materials.

The galleries and grounds are blooming with various botanicals, and Museum programming is blossoming again. I am looking forward to a bustling summer calendar with no homework assignments or gradebooks in sight.

Two large eggplants, one a dark purple and the other a speckled lavender and white, are among other smaller eggplants, blossoms, leaves, and vines.

What a Difference a Week Makes

Abundant Future, opening Saturday, June 11, offers a bit of simulated time travel, fast forwarding through the growing season. While many dote for weeks on recently sown vegetable gardens, nurturing newly-sprouted seedlings, the galleries will be filled with depictions of the bountiful harvest ahead – lush melons, ripe tomatoes, glossy eggplants – from the exhibition’s opening day through August 28. No waiting, weeding, or watering required.

For months, the Woodson Art Museum team and I have been planning and promoting the Corning Museum of Glass Mobile Hot Shop residency now underway. Without a doubt, at this midway point in the ten-day residency, our expectations have been exceeded and we’re looking forward to continued dynamic demonstrations. Glassblowing is magical and the Corning Mobile Hot Shop trio of glass artists is terrific. George, Michael, and Jeff – the Mobile Hot Shop maestros – continue to create imaginative, colorful, and ambitious glassworks now through Sunday afternoon, May 8.

Behind the Scenes with exh-IB-ition

Students participating in Wausau East High School’s IB (International Baccalaureate) Art Program coordinated by department chair Joel Pataconi experienced the challenges and rewards of organizing a museum exhibition. Each year, our staff provides guidance to students, assisting with curating their artwork in a space, just one of the many submission requirements for the IB program. The Museum is eager to continue this rewarding collaboration, now entering its sixth year.

When people ask me what the best state park in Wisconsin is, I unequivocally say “Rock Island.” With its remote location, beautiful natural and manmade features, and breathtaking views, it’s an easy answer.
